The Coast and Highlands of North Wales for Solo Travellers

6 Day Itinerary

• Day 1:

  Local departure by coach or Home Connect service, then by coach to the Beaufort Park Hotel, Mold in North Wales for five nights.

  Included meals: Dinner

• Day 2: North Wales Coastline, Llandudno and Penrhyn Castle

  Included excursion, as we pass sandy beaches and coastal towns, such as Colwyn Bay. Our first port of call is Llandudno. Two miles of sandy beaches and a fine Victorian promenade, curve between the two headlands, Little Orme and Great Orme.

  You may wish to take a scenic tramway ride or a cable car to the top of the 700-feet high Great Orme’s Head, where the views are breathtaking. On a clear day you can see across to the island of Anglesey, the Isle of Man, and the majestic mountains of Snowdonia.

  We later visit the huge 19th century fantasy - Penrhyn Castle. A neo-Norman castle crammed with fascinating items, such as a one-ton slate bed made for Queen Victoria, elaborate carvings, plasterwork and mock-Norman furniture, an outstanding collection of paintings and a fascinating industrial railway museum. The 60 acres of grounds includes exotic trees, plants and a Victorian walled garden.

• Day 3: Welsh Highlands and Ffestiniog Steam Railway

  A day of magnificent scenery, as we enjoy a ride on the Ffestiniog Railway.

  We head first to Blaneau Ffestiniog, with its slate mines, once a key part of North Wales industry. Blaenau Ffestiniog is linked to the coast at Porthmadog by the Ffestiniog Railway, a scenic narrow-gauge line originally built to transport slate. Join the steam-hauled train that runs along a 13½ mile line to the mountains of Blaenau Ffestiniog through tranquil pastures and magnificent forests, past lakes and waterfalls, through tunnels and round horseshoe bends.

  En route you will enjoy the splendid views of Tremadog Bay.

  After time in Porthmadog, we head to Portmeirion, designed in the style of an Italian village and used as the location in many films and TV shows, most noticeably ‘The Prisoner’.

• Day 4: Chester

  Join our included excursion to the medieval city of Chester. The most complete walled city in Britain, Chester is the historic gem of North West England.

  A cornucopia of delights, Chester has inspired writers and artists for years. Soak in the atmosphere created by an abundance of black & white buildings set in a circuit of glorious city walls.

  Chester's crowning glory is the 13th century Rows - two-tiers of shops running along the main streets. A leisurely walk along the 2 miles of the City Walls will take you past many delights, such as the enchanting Eastgate Clock and the 1000 year old Cathedral, a haven of reflective.

  En route you'll come across towers set against the beckoning background of the Welsh mountains that guarded the medieval Port of Chester, ancient bridges across the River Dee, 19th century canals and elegant Georgian town houses.

• Day 5: Day at leisure or Isle of Anglesey

  We offer an optional excursion to Anglesey. We cross the Menai Straits and head first to the village of Llanfair PG (or Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch), made famous for having the longest place name in Britain.

  We continue to Beaumaris, where there is a magnificent castle, one of many in the region built by Edward I; it was never assaulted because its walls are fifteen feet thick!
